Alpenglow lasts minutes, but you plan all day for it. Our small group climbed through afternoon cloud into a sudden, silent world of snow and violet sky — and then the peaks caught fire.
What alpenglow actually is
After the sun drops, its light still strikes the highest summits while the valleys sit in shadow. Snow turns rose, then copper, then a deep ember red. It is physics, but it feels personal.
How to stand in it
Pick a west-facing summit reachable by lift or a short afternoon ascent — many Alpine huts sit exactly where they do for this reason. Carry a headlamp for the descent, warm layers for the wait, and no agenda beyond watching.
The quiet after
When the color drains, the mountains go blue and the first stars arrive. We descended by headlamp in single file, nobody talking. Some experiences don't need commentary.
If you chase one natural spectacle this year, make it this one. Sunsets end. Alpenglow stays with you.
